Mahesh Bhatt had consciously kept himself away from the Karan Johar's STUDENT OF THE YEAR, may be owing to the fact that it was his daughter Aliya Bhatt who is making her debut in the world of cinema, and till the time the film was going through different stages of being wrapped up, he did not want to bring in his presence to affect the way film eventually shaped up .But a father being a father, and the child not debuting under her banner, but striking it out on her own, he could not keep away the pride associated with the launch of the career of the daughter, Aliya Bhatt. So, Mahesh Bhatt took to social networking site to express about his daughter's debut - A new dawn is here. The flowers arrive. Reports of House Full pour in. Aliya's journey begins.
Indeed with STUDENT OF THE YEAR Aliya Bhatt's journey has begun and along with Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra three new faces have been given to the world of Hindi cinema by Karan Johar. What is different about the launch of these stars is that they have been selected after a process of systematic weeding, i.e. Aliya Bhatt has been selected from amongst 400 girls through rounds of elimination and same has been the case with Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, who had assisted Karan Johar earlier, so they have also come through the process. It is for the first time that a film with three newcomers has been mounted on such a lavish scale, Karan Johar having spent around Rs. 35 crore in presenting STUDENT OF THE YEAR to the audience.
Karan Johar in keeping with his style of presentation of youthful films has drawn from High School Musical in terms of stylization and has given it an uber cool look, in sync with the fashion preferences of the youth of the present times. SOTY is a bold step forward for him as he has moved away from working with his regular, Shah Rukh Khan, being directed under his baton, to directing three newcomers. Karan Johar as a producer has made a number of films without Shahrukh Khan, but this is his first film as a director without Shahrukh Khan. Having said that the presence of Shah Rukh Khan still is there, as Red Chillies Entertainment, the production company of Shah Rukh Khan is the co-producer of SOTY. Is it therefore an indication that time has come for Karan Johar to initiate the paradigm shift, a shift to bring in new batch of young stars, who may form pool for his ventures in future. STUDENT OF THE YEAR is indeed a pointer to the fact and it would be interesting to watch whether in the future ventures the trio would be repeated in KJo's films or not. For now STUDENT OF THE YEAR would indeed spawn series of such competitions across schools and colleges for sure, and it would be the ultimate tribute to SOTY.
