This week's major release, Karan Johar's STUDENT OF THE YEAR started on a good note during the morning screenings (40-55 percent), and improved dramatically during the latter shows (65-80 percent) at many cinemas. What is amazing is the fact that even though the film was expected to be predominantly a multiplex fare, it is having a good run even at the single screens.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR, ENGLISH VINGLISH and OMG OH MY GOD!
Given the fact that the film has been appreciated by the paying audience (read youths), the ensuing holidays in the next week will ensure that Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment have a winner on their hands.
Meanwhile all the three releases of last week have failed to entice the audience. The front runner was obviously Rani Mukerji's AIYYAA, which netted around 5.75 crore during the opening week (to be validated), followed by Ram Gopal Varma's 3D horror flick, BHOOT RETURNS, which managed to cross just about 4 crores from India. The dubbed MAKKHI could not emulate its EEGA success story and netted a paltry 2.5 crore from India.
The week also saw a very stable run for Sridevi's ENGLISH VINGLISH, which netted another 11.50 crore taking its two week total to 31.50 crore (to be validated) from India, thereby achieving a semi-hit status.
Concluding with Akshay Kumar's Paresh Rawal starrer, OMG OH MY GOD!, the film moved from strength-to-strength, adding another 13.50 crore and has thus netted 72.50 crore in three weeks from India and is a super duper hit.
