STUDENT OF THE YEAR has released and Varun Dhawan is seeing some good appreciation and acceptance coming his way. While that should be a reason good enough for him to rejoice, till the film's release there were detractors who were trying to spoil the party. While many wanted to look at the newcomer's performance with hawk's eye, as an actor all that Varun wanted to do was go out there and deliver his best.

"I am not blaming anyone though because ultimately it's the audience which takes the final call," Varun said, "The film has been made and audience is ready with their verdict. In today's day and time, no one has the time and patience to look at you just because you are seemingly connected to the industry. People want entertainment and even if they have bought the ticket, they won't hesitate walking out if they don't like what plays on screen. You could well be a Prime Minister's son but none of these matters when the film begins on screen."
It is some similar advice that he received from Shahrukh Khan which eased him during the making of the film. Even though he is the co-producer of the film, he didn't quite visit the film's sets when Karan Johar was calling the shots. However he did make sure to meet each of the three STUDENTS OF THE YEAR and give them a brief pep talk.
"He just relaxed us," smiles Varun, "I remember him pulling me aside and saying that Varun, you are here because of yourself and nothing else. So just be yourself and don't change at all. For me these were golden words no less because Shahrukh is an institution in itself that has to be followed and looked up to. I have made a note of his words; I now have to live up to each of them."
