Fate indeed is an entity with which we cannot grapple, rather we can just wonder at its twists and turns. How many of us would be aware about the fact that while we are celebrating the birthday of arguably the first urban hero of India, Dev Anand, we are not remembering the singer who was in his own way responsible for contributing to Dev Anand's image, Hemant Kumar. Indeed, they share the same date, though for Dev Anand it is his birth anniversary, for Hemant Kumar it is his death anniversary.
DEV ANAND and HEMANT KUMAR
It all started with 'Hai Apna Dil To Awara' in all probability in SOLWA SAAL which underlined the romance that one used to enjoy while traveling in the local trains in Mumbai and indeed this is the song that the students who want to learn harmonica start with. Consider another song, 'Na Tum Hame Jaano Na Hum Tumhe Jaane'- from BAAT EK RAAT KI is another gem that added an element of romance to the persona of Dev Anand.
Though Hemant Kumar sang very few songs for Dev Anand, all of them gems and one wonders, whether Dev Anand should have chosen Kishore Kumar as his voice or should have strived to maintain a balance between Kishore Kumar and Hemant Kumar. Probably, Hemant Kumar could not sing large songs for Dev Anand as he became a music director and as a music director he never got an opportunity to give playback in any of the Nav Ketan films.
It is one of the unfulfilled quests of Hindi cinema as it could have added another golden chapter in the history of Hindi cinema keeping in view the aura that songs like 'Ye Raat Ye Chandni Phir Kahan' from JAAL created or 'Teri Duniya Mein Jeene Se To Behtar Hai Ki Mar Jaate' from KALA PANI or 'Chup Hai Dharti Chup Hai Chand Sitare' from HOUSE NO. 44.
But one thing is for sure Dev Anand and Hemant Kumar in their own way were catalysis to each other in their relative successes in Hindi film industry and they would continue to rule the hearts of fans till music is alive.
