It was waiting to happen, i.e. it was just a matter of time and an opportunity to connect with the legacy that has established the family as the beacon that established rock and roll tradition in India, but when Ranbir Kapoor got the opportunity to do it he just grabbed the opportunity and underlined the fact that indeed he is a part of the pedigree. The song 'Badmateez Dil' from YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI after its release has emerged as one of the most downloaded song.
One of the primary reasons why the song became such a roaring hit was perhaps the fact that it brought back the memories of the times when Shammi Kapoor used to rule the world of music through his rock and roll movies, patterned on the Elvis Presley moves, and Ranbir Kapoor in his own imitable way has packed the punch in the song from YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI by combining the moves of his grandfather and Elvis Presley. Ranbir Kapoor has ensured that the tradition of Rock and Roll that his grandfather established in India would continue to be a part of the family. Ranbir had shown the dexterity of performing to the rock and roll songs in bits and pieces in his earlier films where he got an opportunity to do so, but with YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI he has grabbed the centre stage and this song indeed would become a major source of attraction for the audience when the film eventually releases.
The reason for popularity of the song is owing to the fact that an ambience of the era gone by has been created through this song, and for the present generation the groovy songs of Shammi Kapoor still remain a vital point of reference, and what better way to have a reference of the rock and roll through the star of the present generation aka Ranbir Kapoor.
The catalyst for song catching up like wild fire is that it has been choreographed by Remo D Souza that too within five days, and the music has been composed by Pritam. Pritam’s name has been synonymous with controversies and this song also has not escaped the criticism. Allegations have been leveled against him that this song has also been inspired from Bengali song ‘Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona’ but those who make these allegations forget that if one is using the groove of a song to point out that the song has been inspired from a previous song, then no composition could be branded original, as grooves have similarities, but what marks the difference is the manner in which the whole song is laid out. This is what Pritam has done with the song of YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, and in the era where a Gangam could become a hit world over, overriding language barrier, the Bengali song could also have become a roaring hit, but why it did not, and song composed by Pritam did, underlines the fact that Pritam has indeed injected his musical knack to make this song a roaring hit and critics need to eat crow.
