BOMBAY TALKIES team is 'maha-excited' over Cannes selection
April 20, 2013 10:57:25 AM IST By Rajesh Kumar Singh, Glamsham Editorial
BOMBAY TALKIES will have its Gala Screening at the 66th Cannes Film Festival on 19th May 2013. It is a Sunday and the film is expected to attract a good weekend festival audience. Though the Festival does not sell tickets and the screenings can only be accessed by the media and film professionals, a large number of local population manages to get 'invitations' for the evening red carpet screenings at the magnificent Louis Lumie're Auditorium that has 2300 seats and is part of the Palais des Festivals complex situated at what is famously known as the Croisette, a 2 km long promenade in Cannes that stretches along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.
The BOMBAY TALKIES team is naturally excited about the film's official selection under the Special Screenings section. Anurag Kashyap and TV 18 are Cannes veterans, with their films GANGS OF WASSEYPUR I & II screened at the Directors' Fortnight side bar last year. Kashyap was also at Cannes as the producer of Vikramaditya Motwane's UDAAN in 2011, which was an Un Certain Regard selection. Though Karan Johar and Dibaker Banerjee have been to Cannes, they are going there with their film for the first time. Zoya Akhtar will be setting her foot on Cannes soil for the first time. All four directors are expected to attend the Gala Screening together with the producers. There is no confirmation as yet if any of the stars in the film will be walking the Red Carpet or not.
Here is how the team reacted to the news: -
Karan Johar: ''Extremely honoured that our omnibus endeavor has been officially selected at Cannes.... Can't wait to walk the red carpet with Dibakar, Anurag and Zoya''.
Zoya Akhtar: ''I have never been to Cannes and I always felt if I go it should be with a film. Things worked out even better as it's not just a film but also 3 friends Karan, Dibakar and Anurag with me. It's going to be a blast''.
Dibakar Banerjee: ''Thrilled to walk the red carpet following Karan, Zoya and Anurag leading the way and representing Indian cinema!''
Anurag Kashyap: ''I am so happy our film is screening at Cannes. Happy to be back there.''
The co-producer of the film Ashi Dua of Flying Unicorn Entertainment is also thrilled. It was she who had initiated the whole idea and put the team together and made it happen. She said, ''Our film BOMBAY TALKIES has made it to one of the most prestigious film festivals - Cannes. I am extremely happy that the film has received such an overwhelming response internationally. This means many more people across the globe will be celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema with us''
BOMBAY TALKIES is produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures & Flying Unicorn Entertainment. An anthology of four stories each directed by Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee. The film is made to commemorate the 100 years of Indian Cinema. It releases in India on 3rd May 2013, and Cannes screening will probably be its European premiere. The cast includes Indian film stars like Rani Mukerji, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Randeep Hooda and Saqib Saleem with cameos by Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif.
The 66th Cannes Film Festival runs through 15-26 May, 2013, and India is the Guest Country at the Festival this year.
