The 66th Cannes Film Festival is paying a tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema by a Special Screening of BOMBAY TALKIES, a collection of four short films directed by Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibaker Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap, the new age harbingers of 'auteur' cinema that hovers somewhere between mainstream Bollywood and pure art house as described by Gilles Jacob, president of the Festival. This description is something new for Karan Johar and to some extent for Zoya Akhtar as well, the hard-core yet new age Bollywood filmmakers. In fact, the term Bollywood was invented for Karan's and his close friend Aditya Chopra's films.

Since the success of his first film KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI , Karan has donned multiple hats. He is a successful TV and stage show anchor, a dance reality show judge, a discoverer of new talent, a spokesperson of the Indian film industry, the best dressed director and producer, and even a fashion designer and stylist. He will be putting his fashion designing and styling talent to good use for the benefit of the fellow directors of BOMBAY TALKIES. After all, they will be walking the Cannes red carpet, which, for cinema celebrities, is next only in importance to the Oscar red carpet. So what is he going to do?

A source reveals, ''Karan will call his fashion designer friends and discuss with them Dibakar, Anurag and Zoya's looks for their red-carpet appearances.'' So, what will Anurag Kashyap wear this time - certainly not the old tuxedo he wore in 2011 when he walked the red carpet for UDAAN? What will Zoya and Dibakar wear? Will Karan be in his regular black suit? Will it be something typically Indian that will add variety and a dash of bright colors to generally black & white frocks, evening gowns, skirts, and tuxedos that seem to rule the Cannes red carpet?

We shall know about it soon. The D day is 19th May when BOMBAY TALKIES screens at the Grand Theatre Lumiere of Palais des Festivals at Cannes, followed by the Incredible India bash.
