Way back in the nineties, when AASHIQUI was released, it was lapped up as a romantic story with a difference that created a buzz not seen before in quite a long time. AASHIQUI was a story of woman emancipation as well, the message being lost in the melee of the patina of romance that was used as the template and with icing on the cake being the phenomenal success of the songs of AASHIQUI. It would there be interesting to watch out whether AASHIQUI 2 would be able to underline the quotient of woman emancipation and set it as the point of departure from the original film!
Women emancipation in AASHIQUI was manifest when Rahul Roy pulled out Anu Agarwal from the orphanage, but in a subtle but underlining manner, Anu had told Rahul Roy in AASHIQUI to not have the notion that she will fall for her as a token of gratitude, as it is the wont with the Hindi films. And indeed, Mahesh Bhatt had etched the character of Rahul Roy in such a manner that he did not force Anu Agarwal to marry her, but gave her the independence to find a place for herself and then fall in love with him.
In the present times, when the chorus of female emancipation is echoing around the country side, a romantic film like AASHIQUI 2, if it is able to underline the message in a subtle would be able to bring in a young female audience in droves to lap it up. The present generation of female growing up in different parts of the country indeed has a streak of independence in the way in which she conducts herself, and at the doorstep of entering into a romantic relationship or while being in a romantic relationship, finding a resonance through a film about emancipation in conducting relationships indeed would create a sense of identity with the character of the film and would be the catalysis in making it a roaring hit.
It is to be seen now whether AASHIQUI 2, which released today, would be able to leverage on the spirit of woman emancipation would be a fact that would be watched with interest. Judging from the past record of Mahesh Bhatt, the element has to be there in after all he is acting in the film as well and he has been the director who has espoused and championed the cause of women emancipation.
