Ek sannata sa chha gaya, do jahan pe chha gaya,

Mar ke jeene ki ada, duniya ko bhi sikhla gaya

Rooh mar bhi jaye to aawaj mar sakti nahi

Tujhko geeton se juda kismat kar sakti nahin

Yesterday you read how Hamid Sahab and his brother Mohammed Deen, played a key role in shaping Rafi's career. The duo encouraged Rafi to pursue his 'Musical Interest' by imparting him musical training under eminent classical 'ustads' like Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Firoz Nizami.

After equipping himself under such doyens of music Rafi was geared up to plunge into the world of music. The doors for which were unbolted by Jiwan Lal Mattoo, a programme executive of music at All India Radio Lahore, who happened to listen to Rafi and was overwhelmed by his genius. He called him for an audition test at the AIR studio. Rafi went and was selected. He thus became a radio singer in 1943.

Later impressed by Rafi's superlative voice, the music director who first introduced Rafi's 'golden voice' on 'silver screen' was Shyam Sunder for his Punjabi film, GUL BALOCH (1944) and the song was - 'Suniye hiriye ni, teri yaad ni bahut sataya... The song was a major hit. Shyam Sunder sensing the wizardry of Rafi felt that Lahore was a small platform for a 'Big' talent like Rafi to flourish. Hence he wrote a recommendation letter to his close friend, Music director Naushad in Mumbai and advised Rafi to meet him.
