Yesterday you read about Mohammed. Rafi's raise to stardom. Today in our concluding 'Mohd. Rafi Special Series' read about Mohd. Rafi's versatility and the songs he sung for Kishore Kumar.
MOHAMMED. RAFI AND KISHORE KUMAR
Mohd. Rafi's secret behind success was largely confined to God's distinctive endowment of a bendable voice which probably none possessed in the film industry. A pointer in case can be attributed by the fact that Rafi was the 'only' singer whose voice could shoot up to maximum octaves without narrowing or rupturing!!! Best example being the high pitched 'zindabaad zindabaad aye mohabbat zindabad... (MUGHAL-E-AZAM) or the peppy 'Yahoo...chahe koi mujhe juglee kahe... (JUNGLEE).
Thus Rafi was respected not only by his music directors but also by his rivals (though he had none) like the media creating a dividing line between Rafi Sahab and Kishore Kumar. But the fact is both Rafi and Kishore were good friends. Kishore Kumar had high esteem for Rafi Sahab. Hence in the movie RAGINI where Kishore Kumar played the hero and had to sing a classical based song 'Man Mora Bawra...' he opted out and instead asked the music director O. P. Nayar to have Rafi sing the song. Similarly in the movie SHARARAT Rafi sung the hit classical song Ajab hai dastaan teree hai zindagi.... picturised on Kishore Kumar and Masiha banke bimaronke chale ho kahan karke jee bekarar ... from the film BHAGAM BHAG.
In fact in an interview Kishore Kumar had openly confessed, ''Rafi sahab was a great singer. Some of his songs were so difficult that I have no embarrassment to say that I could not have done justice to them like the hit ghazal Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka Noor Hoon... from the movie LAL QUILA and many more such songs. Rafi Sahab had rare versatility.''
On Rafi's death Kishore Kumar paid rich condolence to Rafi Sahab by singing a Bengali song Se Jano Ajo...
