After Bimal Roy's death Gulzar took to writing at full strength writing all kinds of movies from emotional ones like ANAND, SAFAR, AASHIRWAD to comedies like CHUPKE-CHUPKE, BAWARCHI, GOLMAAL etc. However while he kept himself busy writing, he also made his inroads into directing movies.

Gulzar's foray into film-making began in early 70's with MERE APNE the movies that introduced an array of young graduates from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), which had just began in Pune and promoted intensive training in cinema to youngsters interested in arts and cinema.

Thus the film industry got a number of talented actors like Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Danny Denzongpa, Paintal, Asrani and the talented actor called Dinesh Thakur, who is best remembered for his role in RAJNIGANDHA and GHAR. Unfortunately he could not succeed much in Bollywood; nevertheless he did made a name for himself in the Theatre World!

Remembering his first directorial venture Gulzar in an interview said, ''The subject of MERE APNE was very much 'in tune' with the countries situation as the nations educated youth forced by unemployment were taking to unlawful means. Hence the masses could identify with the movie and the movie was an 'instant' hit despite being handicapped of saleable stars and more importantly without the routine romance and mirch masala.''

The success of this 'de-glamourised' movie encouraged Gulzar, to experiment similar 'novel' and 'untapped' subjects that the mainstream cinema had always ignored.

Thus what followed from the 'Gulzar camp' were a 'different' breed of films with exceptional themes to which Indian masses were never exposed to, like KOSHISH, telling the tale of deaf and dumb couple, PARICHAY, a comedy iced with human relationship, ACHANAK, an unusual murder-mystery, MAUSAM, a bold story exploring an amazing relationship of a father and her destiny torn prostitute daughter, ANGOOR, a fun filled extravagance, DEVTA, a mind-boggling thriller, MAACHIS, handling terrorism problem and many more like MEERA, IJAAZAT, LEKIN and of course, 'AANDHI the movie that made Gulzar 'Star filmmaker' overnight.

On Monday read more about AANDHI and the controversy that made headlines in media.
