Films are said to be the mirror of society, which is quite true because filmmakers portray what they perceive in the society. A look down at bygone era movies reflects that since the birth of cinema in India, many serious & sensitive filmmakers have dealt with themes concerning the woes and problems of our society.

Films like MOTHER INDIA (on oppression of the farmers by the landlords), PYAASA (social reality of material world), SHREE 420 (on corruption), DO ANKHEN BARAH HAATH (Rehabilitation of prisoners), GUMRAH (Extra-marital affair), SUJATA (on untouchability) etc. are just a few examples which go on to prove the aforementioned statement.

Amitabh Bachchan's SATYAGRAHA, directed by Prakash Jha, is a similar kind of movie that has the potential to awake the citizens of the country to unite and upraise against the burning issue of unjust corruption in the country. To connect with the masses Prakash Jha, renowned for making movies on sensitive issues like RAAJNEETI, GANGAAJAL, APAHARAN, has roped in commercial stars like Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and above all Amitabh Bachchan. One wonders will SATYAGRAHA be able to generate the revolution that was created by Mahatma Gandhi when he gave the famous 'Quit India' call?

Whether the movie creates uprising upon citizens of India will be known only when the movie releases but to make movies based on social issues is commendable. Tragically today Bollywood lacks filmmakers like Prakash Jha. A quick glance at the movies made today reveals that except for a handful of filmmakers, all the others are engaged in the mad rush towards making money. The craze to make a fast buck is so intense that originality has died and filmmakers are minting money by rehashing old movies!!!

Earlier the filmmakers made remakes of either Hollywood flicks or our very own regional films and today they are coolly making the remakes of Bollywood past hits caring damn for originality!

Filmmaker should understand that they are into a very powerful medium and should utilize it in the right manner. The filmmaker of yesteryears generated patriotic fervor in the masses during times of distress with the films like SHAHEED, ANAND MATH, HUM DONO, LEADER, HAQEEQAT et al.

Today, when our country is gripped by inflation and corruption, it is the duty of the present day filmmaker to come up with movies which will help in solving these national issues.
