The making of the classic ANAND - PART III

Among the many hits directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee the movie that stands out most strikingly is the Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan starrer ANAND (1971). Readers would be surprised to know that Hrishikesh Mukherjee had conceived the plot in the late 50s but could make it only after 20 years later! Do you know the reason for the delay?
Well, according to reports Hrishikesh Mukherjee during the making of ANARI, came close to Raj Kapoor and was so floored by Raj Sahab's human nature that he penned a couplet in Bengali capturing the showman's earthy nature during the shooting of the film. Later it was lyricist Shailender Singh who rewrote it into the super hit song. The song was Kisi Ki Muskuraahaon Pe Ho Nisaar / Kisi Ka Dard Mil Sake To Le Udhaar....
Raj Kapoor and Hrishikesh Mukherjee became good friends and Raj Kapoor used to affectionately call Hrishikesh Mukherjee as 'Babu Moshai', the term which Hrishkeshdaa used in the movie ANAND.
Besides penning the couplet, Hrishida also wrote a heartrending script based on Raj Sahab's ever smiling and zestful style of living and narrated the script to Raj Sahab, which he liked but asked Hrishkeshdaa to postpone as he was busy with his home production JIS DESH MEIN GANGA BEHTI HAI hence Hrishkeshdaa had to postpone his project. After JIS DESH MEIN GANGA BEHTI HAI, Raj Kapoor began his ambitious first colour film SANGAM. Thus Hrishkeshdaa's dream of making the movie with Raj Sahab was further delayed. However, he did not give up.
Years later in the 70s after the disastrous failure of MERA NAAM JOKER, when Raj Kapoor was left with no work, Hrishikesh Mukherjee once again approached Raj Sahab with the same script but this time again Raj Kapoor turned it down on the excuse that he was in desperate need of funds hence was busy making BOBBY. Left with no option, Hrishikesh Mukherjee approached Shashi Kapoor but the young Kapoor was too busy, thanks to his string of successful movies like SHARMILEE, HASEENA MAAN JAAYEGI, AA GALE LAG JAA etc. With Shashi Kapoor also opting out of the project Hrishkeshdaa decided to cast Kishore Kumar and Mehmood in the lead roles but Kishore Kumar declined as he had some difference over a cultural show.
Thus Hrishkeshdaa was above to sleeve his project when one day during the shooting break of BAWARCHI, he happened to narrate the script to Rajesh Khanna, the superstar of 70's. Khanna who had an ear for good script immediately gave his nod, thus giving birth to one of Indian Cinema's classic ANAND. While Raj Kapoor ignored Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the latter didn't, as he marked the beginning of his movie by paying tribute to the legendary filmmaker with his message that reads: A FILM DEDICATED TO RAJ KAPOOR
