JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY: What's in a name?
February 2, 2013 01:25:08 PM IST By Enkayaar, Glamsham Editorial
Vivek Oberoi could be one of the few stars in the acting fraternity who within a short span of six months is acting in a movie with a different kind of a name, the movie being JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY. Just a few months ago he had acted in the film KLPD- KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI, and after JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY he would be acting in another movie with such a queer name- ZILA GHAZIABAD.
Well, William Shakespeare had written a long time ago, what's in a name, and Hindi cinema seems to be following the maxim. The guiding principle in adopting such unconventional names could stem from the fact that titling the film in an unconventional manner could generate the curiosity among the fans to go and see what the movie is all about. In fact it was the element of unconventional in the titles like SHIRIN FARHAD KI TO NIKAL PADI and FERRARI KI SAWAARI that was in a way catalyst in creating a buzz around them.
This trend was more of a prerequisite of the so-called art films that were being made earlier, but now even the commercial cinema seems to have been bitten by the bug of unconventional and is warming up to it. Among the actors of the art genre of the erstwhile era who have been associated with uncommon names one could say with conviction that Pankaj Kapur and Naseeruddin Shah have acted in most of such films. The latest such film in which Pankaj Kapur acted was MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA and in the earlier times his films included EK DOCTOR KI MAUT, for Naseeruddin Shah such films would include ALBERT PINTO KO GUSSA KYON AATA HAI and SALIM LANGDE PE MAT RO.
Even Imran Khan has acted in two films with such unconventional names, and in sync with the unconventionality of the nomenclature has given contrasting performances that have been appreciated and include MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN, and MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA.
It is not that Tips Films which is producing JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY is treating this business of unconventional naming of the film as one time affair. They are coming up with another film PHATA POSTER NIKLA HERO starring Shahid Kapoor, which again has an unconventional title. Yash Raj films have also experimented with unconventional names, and their latest offering MERE DAD KI MARUTI underlines the maxim, being preceded by such names as ROCKET SINGH: SALESMAN OF THE YEAR, LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG etc.
It would be an injustice if one does not include the name of the duo Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raj Kumar Hirani as the practitioners of this genre, as they have perfected it, starting with MUNNA BHAI MBBS, LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI, 3 IDIOTS, and now P.K.
Incidentally, all these names which have been named unconventionally have had an element of unconventional in their storyline, and one only hopes that this tradition would continue with JAYANTABHAI KI LUV STORY and would enthrall the audience.
