Akshay Kumar has struck again. His SPECIAL 26 has not just opened to massive critical acclaim from all quarters; it has also seen a very steady run at the box office currently, hence turning out to be a commercial success as well. With around 40 crores coming in already and one more day to go before the end of week, the film is on course to be a good earner. However the multi-crore question is - 'How far will it go from here?'
"While it is a given that the film would cross the KHILADI 786 collections of around 70 crores, it would be very interesting to see if it crosses the collections of OMG OH MY GOD! which had collected over 80 crores. That too was a massively acclaimed film and had grown from strength to strength, courtesy very good word of mouth. There is no reason why SPECIAL 26 should not be aiming at such a total,'' says an insider.
If one compares the box office progress of the two films, the first week total of OMG - OH MY GOD had read 36 crores whereas that number was already crossed by SPECIAL 26 in five days. Of course Akshay Kumar has seen such numbers being achieved in three days flat but that was for biggie entertainers like ROWDY RATHORE and HOUSEFULL 2.
"OMG - OH MY GOD! and SPECIAL 26 are the kind of films that have restricted audience. Moreover, let's not forget that if audiences are still bringing in good footfalls for the Neeraj Pandey film over the weekdays, it is worthy enough since pirated DVDs are out all over. Unlike a RACE 2 or ROWDY RATHORE which are designed as big screen entertainers, the likes of SPECIAL 26 and OMG - OH MY GOD! could well be preferred in the comfort of home. Still it is sheer appreciation that has made these films continue to be so strong."
With the next quintessential big screen outing, HIMMATWALA still more than a month away, one looks forward to the kind of distance that SPECIAL 26 eventually covers.
