Had it been released on Sankranti, KAI PO CHE! which is a Gujrati term and literally means I have cut your kite, could have garnered associated footfalls, as Sankranti, which is being celebrated as the festival all over Gujrat and in other parts of India, as also Lodhi which was celebrated yesterday in Punjab has kite flying as an integral element of the festival construct.

KAI PO CHE! could also have been benefited by the vibrant Gujrat summit going on in Ahmedabad, which has emerged as the leitmotif of international Kite flying festival celebrated on the banks of Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, and it would be interesting to watch whether KAI PO CHE! has included the kite flying festival as a part of the cinematic construct.

Indeed, from the promos of KAI PO CHE!, and the detailed manner in which it has used the occasion of Sankranti to the kite flying that is indulged in by the residents of Gujrat, it is evident that the occasion of Sankranti would be used as a determining metaphor in the film.

It was another film by the name HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, which in all probability was the first film that had used the occasion of Sankranti in a big way in the film, and it was thenceforth that KAI PO CHE! became a part of the lexicon of having conquered something, or having achieved something. KAI PO CHE!, the latest offering of Abhishek Kapoor, underlines the same premise, premise of victory against all odds, of a free spirit of the present generation which would leave no stone unturned to soar in the sky.

Kite flying was used as a part of the cinematic oeuvre in B R Chopra directed NAYA DAUR as an occasion to celebrate festivity. However, as a metaphor of spirit trying to break shackles and attain freedom, it was used in a rather poignant manner in NAMAK HARAM, in the song- Main Shayar Badnam, of a soul which may have been defeated in life, but was now desirous of attaining victory by breaking the shackles of a human body.

Indeed, Kite as a metaphor, in most of the cases where it has been used in Hindi cinema has been used to connote liberation, independence etc., or as an occasion to celebrate, fun, frolic and fervor as it was used in Satyajit Ray's SHATRANJ KE KHILADI.

One only hopes that KAI PO CHE! would underline the importance of Kite flying as an occasion to celebrate festivities, and would not be relegated or associated with only Sankranti but would expand the ambit to become an integral part of other festivals as well. Incidentally, kite flying as a metaphor for celebration of independence is a necessary accompaniment of our Independence Day and Republic Day as well.
