Offbeat cinema shines at Screen Awards 2013
January 15, 2013 11:18:24 AM IST By Enkayaar, Glamsham Editorial
Has Screen Awards 2013 set the tone for the manner in which various award ceremonies would be conducted this year? Screen Awards 2013 have respected and acknowledged the new frontiers that Hindi cinema has traveled in 2012, and has awarded all those who have been associated with charting an independent course and to present a content to the fans, which they themselves believed in.
PAAN SINGH TOMAR, BARFI, VICKY DONOR and ENGLISH VINGLISH
So we have a PAAN SINGH TOMAR and BARFI! being conferred the award for best actor in the form of Irrfan Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, while Vidya Balan has made it four in a row for the offbeat films that she acted in, in 2013 she was conferred the award for KAHAANI and she won it for PAA, ISHQIYA and THE DIRTY PICTURE.
The icing on the cake was conferring Ram Nath Goenka Award to GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, which indeed is a coming of age for cinema, and the Screen Awards have also acknowledged brilliant performances in 2012 by not hesitating to give two awards in category if the jury felt two deserved it. So without hesitation they conferred the Best Actor Awards to Irrfan Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, in the same manner, they conferred Anu Kapoor for his role in VICKY DONOR and to Abhishek Bachchan for his role in BOL BACHCHAN.
Screen Awards also went on to recognize the role of marketing in selling a film and making it a hit with the audience, by conferring the award on BARFI! for being the Best Marketed film. As a matter of fact GANGS OF WASSEYPUR were conferred the maximum awards, including for Best Action, Best Ensemble Cast, Best actor in a Negative role, while Dolly Ahluwalia for her gutsy performance in VICKY DONOR got a best supporting actress award. It was the subject matter like VICKY DONOR that provided an opportunity to a performance like that of Dolly Ahluwalia, which a mainstream cinema could never have provided. VICKY DONOR for that matter earned best debut for Ayushmann Khurrana, and Ilena D'Cruz got it for BARFI! in the female category.
To have the guts to make an off-beat film like ENGLISH VINGLISH earned for Gauri Shinde the best debut director, while PAAN SINGH TOMAR was the best film. The only films from the 100 crore club that could make their place in the roll call of off-beat films of 2012 at Screen Awards were EK THA TIGER, DABANGG 2 and JAB TAK HAI JAAN where Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif got the awards under the popular category, Katrina Kaif perhaps becoming first actress to won an award for two films in an year, they being JTHJ and ETA.
One only hopes that for the sake of cinema and for the sake of growth of film industry other awards that would follow suit Screen Awards would recognize the new initiatives and honor them.
