Dear Prateik,

What happened? You promised so much with your fleeting presence in JAANE TU... YAA JAANE NA...

You had the industry speaking highly about your caliber as an actor. But films that followed have seen a gradual decline in your acting. You have that same approach to all your roles which you had in MY FRIEND PINTO. That film demanded you be goofy as a character, not EKK DEEWANA THA and definitely not ISSAQ. If you view all these movies back-to-back you will know what I mean.

This I can attribute to one thing; you are a director's actor. The other is that directors are not telling you what exactly they want from a scene, or how exactly they want you to enact it. If you ever get a chance to work with Tigmanshu Dhulia you will understand what I am saying. Tigmanshu enacts a scene explaining to his characters what he wants out of the shot, right down to the expressions and body language. That is not a bad way to go about a film, considering he is the man with the vision for the final product.

That is exactly what you need. You are good, but you need to be told. Nothing wrong in that. Mr Amitabh Bachchan too is a director's actor. All leading actors not only in Bollywood, but also Hollywood will tell you how they submit themselves as a character in the hands of the director.

This is what you need to do. This is what you need to tell your director...

There are exceptions to the course as well... There are actors like Ashok Samarth, Prashant Narayanan and Nassar. Give these three actors, any dialogue, any scene in any situation and they are sure to make it look watchable and also enjoyable. Mind you, at the back of their mind they will know that this is a scene that does not make any sense to them as an actor, but they have it in them to make it resound, just by their brilliance and their personal interpretation of the scene. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is another genius. Among the girls, do watch Neha Sharma for her spontaneity.

Take time out; watch the above-mentioned actors in their films. Do a detailed study of their dialogue delivery, body language and camera positioning. It all counts. Also, it would not be a bad idea to take the help of an 'acting counselor'. Get to know where you are going wrong. Get people who speak the truth to surround you. Not friends like those who surrounded cricketer Vinod Kambli at his peak and today are nowhere in sight. Get honest, brutally-frank opinions.

You are good, a raw diamond that needs vigorous polishing.

Shine you will, just like your mother did. With what conviction do I say this? I went back to watching JAANE TU... YAA JAANE NA... after being disappointed with ISSAQ.

You were bloody good!

God Bless You
Martin D'Souza
