Comeback of Holi in Hindi cinema with Karan Johar's YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI

The promos of Karan Johar produced and Ayan Mukerji directed YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, released just before Holi, where Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone are shown letting their hair down in the revelry of Holi is a smart exercise to build a buzz around the movie as also around the festival. After all, it is Karan Johar who has probably for the first time in his cinematic journey so far, used the occasion of Holi in his film and with the festival just around the corner; this song is going to be one favored to be played again and again all over the country.
As a matter of fact Holi in the recent times has been rather sporadically used in the cinematic metaphor, as it was used earlier, but with the element of sporadic embedded in it, the songs have been super hit, the reference being alluded to the song- Do me a favor lets play Holi from the film WAQT- A RACE AGAINST THE TIME, which otherwise would not qualify as all-time great Holi song.
Holi, whenever it has been used in the Hindi films has been used as an element to connoted the rasas of rati-love, hasa- laughter, vismaya- astonishment and utsaha- energy. These are the four idioms that have defined the songs of Hindi cinema from the time Holi started being celebrated in Hindi cinema. The only deviation in this plot was observed in SHOLAY where there was a subtle hint to a widow re-marriage using the occasion of Holi to drive home the point, as it was in KATI PATANG, but indirectly it was suggestive of Rati or love, as it was the emotion that was provided a visual manifestation to setting the tone for Rati or Love.
As a matter of fact the subtle suggestiveness of remarriage by using Holi as a metaphor was one of the highlights of the iconic Dev Anand film GUIDE, whose lyrics- aaee Holi aaee where Waheeda Rehman dances in the background of kaleidoscope of colors in the background was a suggestive indicator to colors coming back to life for Waheeda Rehman and this could be the reason why it has been one of the most iconic Holi songs.
It is not that Holi has been used as a metaphor of celebration in the world of Hindi cinema. It also has been used as the trigger for rape as well, or stalking, as it was shown by Yash Chopra in DARR, and by Raj Kumar Santoshi in DAMINI. Or for that matter as it was shown in ADALAT, one of the mega hits of Big B.
One only hopes that with Karan Johar taking the lead, in perhaps giving a new dimension to Holi through YE JAWAANI HAI DEWANI, Holi would get a new lease of life in Hindi cinema.
