If there was one actress who could bring audience to the cinema halls based on sheer dance prowess, it is Madhuri Dixit whose name would instantly come into mind. Indeed, she was one of those rare stars in the world of Hindi cinema who from the time she mesmerized the audience with Ek do Teen TEZAAB number to Dhak Dhak from BETA, and Que Sera Sera of PUKAR where she matched Prabhudheva step for step, with each of her films created new benchmarks of dance for the audience to soak in its ambience and to groove to its beats. Indeed, if a treatise where to be written how a star was responsible or fired the imagination of scores of citizens around the country side to pick up dance as a form of sports, it was Madhuri's performances through scores of numbers that did the trick.
May be, this could have been the reason why when she decided to make a comeback, she chose a film like AAJA NACH LE which again was a celebration of dance to perhaps to rekindle the memories of the audience associated with her through her prowess of dance. But the reception to the film was lukewarm. Madhuri Dixit, however, was undeterred and continued to keep herself in circulation through various dance based programmes, being aired on various television channels, by judging the performances. The dance programmes which she judged was packed in such a manner that perhaps every episode revoked the memory of one or the other of her hit numbers and the participants egged her on to dance to those numbers from the past. So, even a Ranbir Kapoor also when he appeared in one of the programmes to promote BARFI! bent on his knees to request Madhuri to dance with him as it was his ultimate dream. And perhaps Madhuri Dixit felt that her dance indeed had an ability to mesmerize the fans so she created website which features all her dance numbers.
But slowly - slowly the magic is falling apart and the charm of Madhuri Dixit as a dance diva is not providing the longevity to her career that she could have expected. Even in DEDH ISHQIYA which is another of her remake films, she is talking more of the dance number than the film.
It is high time Madhuri Dixit need to deconstruct herself, and do a film where she does not dance. Is it easier said than done? Indeed, if a Big B could deconstruct himself, can Madhuri not do the same thing? In her yet to be released film GULAAB GANG her contemporary Juhi Chawla has deconstructed herself by playing a negative character, as a matter of fact Juhi has deconstructed herself over the years by exploring her acting prowess through acting in regional films. Should Madhuri Dixit also not try Marathi cinema?
Marathi cinema indeed is at an exciting stage with amazingly diversified kind of films being made, and they need a brand ambassador like Madhuri Dixit to further push their cause. Would Madhuri Dixit take the challenge, say by producing and enacting in a film in Marathi? Jury is out on this.
