They started their career on a different note, while Karan Johar took the usual route of romance peppered with running around the trees and mushy romance in KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM to announce his arrival in the world of Hindi film making, Farhan Akhtar chartered the unconventional course through DIL CHAHTA HAI. But after passage of sometime, both these producers have evolved and are now making films that one could be proud off, they have emerged as head of production houses, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, while Farhan Akhtar along with Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment which when holds the baton connotes that something different is on offer.
FARHAN AKHTAR and KARAN JOHAR
While Karan Johar has more or less given up direction and has emerged as the producer par excellence giving opportunity to new directors to experiment under his banner, Farhan Akhtar still continues to direct and also act in the movies. This is the only difference between these two producers, that Farhan Akhtar continues to act as also direct, for all practical purposes Karan Johar has become a full time producer who is more engaged and interested in experimenting with different genre of film making.
For Karan Johar, handing over the baton of direction started in a big way with KAAL, and now with his latest offering YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI which is directed by Ayan Mukerji has indeed perfected his template of film making. It does not however mean that Karan Johar has quit direction, he indeed holds the baton for his favourite star Shahrukh Khan in MY NAME IS KHAN, but it is an occasion that now happens as an occasion.
Farhan Akhtar on the other with two of his offerings FUKREY and BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is celebrating the underdogs, those who have been forgotten in the annals of history. As a matter of fact it would be happening perhaps for the first time that a commemorative stamp would be released around the time BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is released and FUKREY is celebrating failure in a big way by inviting those who have failed or passed with great difficulty in their exams to come and celebrate their success.
For Farhan Akhtar as a matter of fact this has been his signature template of film making, if one were to leave aside the DON series, on the other hand the characteristic template that defines Karan Johar style of film making is that which uses the upper or middle upper class as its content base to weave the miasma of story.
In terms of their experience in Hindi cinema Karan Johar is a senior to Farhan Akhtar, but now they represent the new generation of film making that does not think twice about treading the unconventional path, if the story has a meat in it. It would be interesting if one of those days Karan Johar holds the baton once again to direct Farhan Akhtar, and if and when it happens for the fans it would be a double whammy!
