Imtiaz Ali's HIGHWAY is all set to release on 13th of December, 2013, but not many people know that he had directed an episode of the same name, which aired on a TV channel in the early 2000s. It was a part of a series called 'Rishtey'.
This particular episode told the story of an affluent girl Veera, who gets abducted before her marriage and her journey thereafter with the gang leader Vijay. Also, the lead characters of the Randeep Hooda-Alia Bhatt starrer HIGHWAY are also called Veera and Vijay, just like the TV episode.
Imtiaz Ali said, ''It was for Rishtey on Zee TV. It was a 45-minute slot. I was not satisfied. I felt that the story needed to be told on a bigger scale. It had the power and magnificence to become a full-blown movie.''
Talking about the film, Imtiaz had said that it is 'a story of two opposite people united by fate'. He wanted this to be his debut film, but he further added, ''However, I am actually glad that it did not happen at that time. More than a decade later, the story is still with me. I think I understand the story much better now and am in a better position to make the film version.''
