Veteran actress Mala Sinha, who ruled the hearts of film buffs in the early 50s and 60s till late 70s, turns 77 on November 11. Glamsham.Com wishes her many happy returns of the day and enlightens readers how Alda Sinha became Mala Sinha!
A look at the bewitchingly beautiful Mala Sinha, with big wide eyes and perfect Hindi diction may leave one bewildered that Mala Sinha is actually a Christian born in a Bengali-Nepali Christian family. Her mother was a Nepali and her father a Christian settled in Bengal. Her name was Alda Sinha but her friends in school used to tease her 'Dalda', which was a famous brand of vegetable oil in those days. Hence when she got her first film assignment as child artist she changed her name as Baby Nazma and when she became an actress she switched to Mala Sinha.
Mala Sinha reached the pinnacle of success in the 60s. Her biggest asset was that she mostly did heroine-oriented roles like DHOOL KA PHOOL, GUMRAAH, BAHURANI, MERE HUZOOR, AASRA, ANPADH, BAHAREN PHIR BHI AAYENGI, etc. when the industry boast of great actors like Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor etc. A major feat indeed!
Recently she was in news when dejected by the Phalke Academy award committee she declined to receive the most prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award as there was no mention of her name in the invitation card while in a press release meet (where she was also present) the Phalke Academy award committee had declared her for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
