Monty Sharma: Sanjay Leela Bhansali is like a brother to me

Music composer Monty Sharma has earned rave reviews for his music in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films like HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, DEVDAS, BLACK and SAAWARIYA. And now he is gearing up for yet another grand release in the form of GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA.
With the mammoth task of doing music for all the SLB films, Monty seems to have made a special bond with the perfectionist director. ''I have a strong bonding with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. We have been working together since HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM. The kind of work he wants and appreciates is what I do. So there is more of a bonding. He is like a brother to me,'' says an excited Monty. He further added, ''The kind of work and free hand he has given me makes it a place where I have done my best. He has always appreciated me.''
With Monty having composed music for all of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films, how difficult and different has it been composing music for GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA and pat comes the reply, ''GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA is a pretty different film from the ones Bhansali makes. He is one of the biggest filmmaker. The film is set up in Gujarat. So I had a very Gujarati theme, with an essence of folk. It is a stunning film in the likes of BLACK and DEVDAS and is sure to make its mark.''
Creating music for grand films and having it loved by the audience is indeed a difficult task. But then which one is special? ''HDDCS, DEVDAS, SAAWARIYA, BLACK, RAM-LEELA - All are close to me. I can't be biased. They all are special,'' quips Sharma.
While stories of Sanjay Leela Bhansali being a task master have been doing the rounds, Monty has a different side to it. He says, ''Sanjay ji being a task master is right but then there is another side to it. There are two sides to a coin. He appreciates good work. If you give him something that is good and genuine and that is going correctly with his film then he will not interfere and give you a free hand. But he is definitely particular about what he wants. If he gets what he wants he is gem of a person. And he knows what he wants.''
Monty further clarifies about audiences drawing comparisons between Bhansali's previous works and feels, ''Every person has his/her own style. RD Burman, SD Burman had their own style. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has his own style.''
Ask him to what he loves doing more - Composing the background score or being a music director, and he expresses, ''I love giving the background score more since it becomes an integral part of the film. You remove the background score from the film, say for BLACK or DEVDAS, it will become dull. And also that giving a background score is more interesting and challenging.''
Now that GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA has got thumbs up from the critics, what expectations does Sharma have from the movie, to which he concludes, ''Filmfare. Bilkul GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA ko bhi milega Filmfare.''
