Tun Tun, the 'blubber' comedienne of Indian cinema who ruled for almost five decades solely on her portly figure had initially begun her career as a playback singer as Uma Devi. Her hit song Afsaana Likh Rahi Hoon...(DARD) is still an all-time classic.
What may stun the readers is that she was selected by none other but the legendary Music wizard Naushad. It may further come as a stunner that she was such a favourite of Naushad that she was originally planned to sing the super hit song 'Ayega Aane Wala...' (MAHAL) but why she lost the song is a sorrow tale.
Tun Tun was a tomboy as a child and had a passion for singing. She listened to film songs from radio and mastered her singing skills. Once as she was rendering a famous song of yesteryear melody queen Noorjehan, music maestro Naushad happened to listen her. A wonderstruck Naushad was taken aback by this 13-years girl golden baritone. He instantly made her sign a contract with A. R. Kardar Production as their 'exclusive' lady playback singer, earning 500 rupees a month!
After her impressive debut with 'Afsana Likh Rahi Hoon' becoming a runaway hit. Uma Devi was on her way. 'Yeh Kaun Chala' a duet with Suraiya, the leading songsters of the time saw Uma Devi taking to dizzying heights of stardom with her name joining with the ranks of Zohrabai Ambalewali, Noorjehan and Shamshad Begum.
She remained Naushad's favorite performer. He usually reserved a couple of songs per film for her. Uma Devi continued to make her mark with scores like DILLAGI, CHANDNI RAAT ('Chandni Raat Hai, Dekhi Kya Raat Hai'), and NAATAK.
When MAHAL was being made music director Khemchand Prakash offered her the song 'Ayega Aane Wala...' but her contract with A. R. Kardar Production restricted her from singing in outside production house. Hence the song went to upcoming singer Lata Mangeshkar, thus making Lata a star singer.
Frustrated by the bound, Uma Devi took a chance when she broke the contract and accepted the mouthwatering offer from S.S. Vasan's mega movie CHANDRALEKHA. However angered by the breach of contract A. R. Kardar broke off the association thus bringing a literal ruining her musical career.
