The film ZANJEER, through which Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan found his stardom, initially was rejected by Dev Anand, Raaj Kumar and many more actors. Filmmaker Prakash Mehra decided to shelve the project when Salim-Javed, the script-writers, introduced him to the then upcoming actor, Amitabh Bachchan.

However, Bachchan had a string of 11 flops under his belt. Also the role demanded a macho action hero while Bachchan had majorly done soft and romantic roles like PYAR KI KAHANI, SANJOG, BANSI BIRJU, EK NAZAR. But fortunately, Bachchan had done Mehmood's BOMBAY TO GOA, in which he had few fight sequences with the villain, Shatrughan Sinha. Hence, Salim-Javed showed Prakash Mehra few action scenes from the movie and persuaded him to cast Bachchan. Mehra finally gave the nod. Rest is history!
