40 years of BOBBY: A monumental achievement for Hindi cinema

As Indian Cinema celebrated its 100th year, it also has paved the way for monumental achievements for other cult films as well, which defined the contours of cinema and changed the way the films were being made. One such monumental film was BOBBY which heralded the era of teen-romance and it celebrates its 40th year of release this month.
BOBBY is a revolutionary film as it was outlier moment for Raj Kapoor who changed his world view about cinema and went tangent to indulge in teenage romance after the phenomenal failure of his magnum opus MERA NAAM JOKER.
Raj Kapoor, for the uninitiated was a great fan of comics, in particular Archies and while reading one of the comics the line- 'You are too young to fall in love'- became the trigger for him to change the manner in which romance was construed thence in Indian cinema. He pushed the bar and took the trigger for romance to adolescence, an age which hitherto was never considered the threshold to fall in love, but Raj Kapoor being Raj Kapoor made the argument stand on its head, and after the stupendous success of BOBBY romantic films on the silver screen were never the same again.
It was an outlier moment for Hindi cinema as it created a class of film making called ''Love stories'' which Raj Kapoor continued to experiment with passion one way or the other till he left for the heavenly abode.
In the present times when romance is being construed and visualized in as imaginative forms as possible it indeed would be instructive not to forget the progenitor of this trend in Hindi cinema Raj Kapoor as we celebrate completion of 100 years of cinema.
