Gujarat seems to be the flavor of the season and Sanjay Leela Bhansali who in the recent memory was amongst the first who unraveled the colorful kaleidoscopic extravaganza of Gujarat through his super successful film HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM is returning again to Gujarat with a vengeance in RAMLEELA. The initial promos that have been released underline the fact that Gujarati flavor is going to be the dominating motif of RAMLEELA what with Deepika Padukone sashaying in bright Ghaghras and even a Ranveer Singh sporting Gujarati outfit with an elan.
This as a matter of fact is the differentiator that Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems to be leveraging upon in RAMLEELA as compared to HDDCS, as in HDDCS Salman Khan was not seen sporting a Gujarati outfit but in RAMLEELA Ranveer Singh is shown sporting different Gujarati outfits. As a matter of fact the kind of richness that Sanjay Leela Bhansali brings to his frames through detailed work on costumes is what makes him stand out from among his peers. One wonders whether were it not for a Sanjay Leela Bhansali the vibrant colors that Gujarat has been famous for would have showcased to the citizens of the country as he did it with HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM. One can argue that a Ketan Mehta had also used the vibrant colors of Gujarat in MIRCH MASALA, but the moot point is that in MIRCH MASALA the story was situated inside a spice factory so it perhaps could not create that kind of an opportunity to experiment with colors and costumes of Gujarat in the manner in which Sanjay Leela Bhansali did it in HDDCS and is now again doing it in RAMLEELA.
For Deepika Padukone, riding on the success of CHENNAI EXPRESS, RAM LEELA would be her first exposure to Gujarat as well through a cinematic frame and it could not have come at an more opportune time for her, as Sanjay Leela Bhansali indeed is famous for adding a nuance to the persona of the actresses with whom he has worked, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being a live example. RAMLEELA indeed further enhance the colorful image of Gujarat that public have in their minds and being a romantic drama adapted from Romeo and Juliet it would be a visual treat to watch out for.
