Winner of two national awards and multiple popular awards, Ajay Devgn has proved his credentials as an actor par excellence. Ajay turns 45 on April 2; Glamsham.Com wishes him birthday greetings and explores how filmmaker director Mahesh Bhatt changed his life from a wooden actor to a versatile actor with his movie ZAKHAM.

Before venturing into acting Ajay Devgn wished to make a career in direction but when film director Kuku Kohli offered him an interesting script in PHOOL AUR KAANTE he could not resist the offer and gave-in. The movie proved hit and opened a floodgate of offers. However, the critics sidelined Ajay as a wooden actor and labeled him as a mere action hero. But kudos to Mahesh Bhatt who dared to cast Ajay Devgn in his intense movie ZAKHAM, which tapped the hidden talent of Devgn.

In an interview Mahesh Bhatt confessed, ''When I selected Ajay for ZAKHAM, I was bombarded with criticism for my odd selection because Ajay was branded as an action hero whereas my protagonist in ZAKHAM, was a sensitive music director who is torn between his love for his mother and the fundamentalist society who thrive on dividing the society on faith.''

Recalling the death scene of his mother in the movie, Ajay Devgn, in an interview said, ''I was required to emote and express emotional strife. It was a difficult scene hence Maheshji asked me to rehearse the scene but I felt I could react better if I face the situation. Hence I requested Maheshji to take the shot without rehearsal. Maheshji appreciated my confidence and took the shot. Interestingly, the scene was finalized in a single take with huge applause from Maheshji and the crew!''

The movie fetched Ajay Devgn his first National Award as Best Actor and tight lipped both the critics who criticized Ajay Devgn as a wooden actor and Mahesh Bhatt, for selecting Ajay in ZAKHAM as hero.

In fact, Ajay Devgn even acknowledged candidly, ''I am obliged to directors like Mahesh Bhatt, Rajkumar Santoshi and Prakash Jha for exploiting my histrionics. These directors have really liberated me from the cage where I was trapped as an action hero.''
