Kangana Ranaut has done it. She is now the proud actress of the highest grossing film in the history of Bollywood - QUEEN - which has a woman protagonist driving the entire show. In the process, she has edged past Vidya Balan whose KAHAANI held this record till very recently.
QUEEN and KAHAANI
Numbers are there for all to see. KAHAANI had netted around 59 crore in India and now QUEEN has collected a few more lakhs already and has almost touched the 60 crore mark. The film still has some steam left and now the lifetime collections would be in the range of 62-63 crore.
While KAHAANI rested entirely on Vidya's shoulders with Parambrata Chatterjee, an unknown face in Hindi cinema, in a strong supporting role, QUEEN was an out and out Kangana show with Rajkummar Rao carrying grey shades in a very minor part.
"Both films are entirely women centric though and now the success of QUEEN proves once again that a leading lady is indeed a 'Queen' in a film where content is the 'King'," a filmmaker adds with an intended pun.
There are a couple of higher grossing films though with a leading lady as a central protagonist. However Bipasha Basu's RAAZ 3 [70 crore] as well as Vidya Balan's THE DIRTY PICTURE [80 crore] had the star power of Emraan Hashmi to boost their total. On the other hand QUEEN didn't have any such star power to hang on to which makes its success all the more sweet.
Now, one waits to see if the battle between Kangana and Vidya would resume when their heroine centric films REVOLVER RANI and BOBBY JASOOS release in the coming weeks.
