Come 15 August, ‘Independence Day’ and our eyes become moist in the memory of the millions of freedom fighters and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for independence. In the freedom movement besides national leaders and the countrymen, the film industry too played a lion’s share. Glamsham.Com pays homage to these film personalities who devoted their self for the Indian Freedom Movement.

Eminent filmmakers like Sohrab Modi, Prabhat Film, V. Shantaram, Mehboob Khan, K.A. Abbas etc. made patriotic films. Movies like SIKANDAR, PRITHVI VALLABH, SHAHEED, PADOSI, DHARTI KE LAL etc. created communal harmony and injected patriotic passion among countrymen.

Film lyricist like Kavi Pradeep, Kaifi Azmi, Sahir Ludhyanvi, Bharat Vyas, Majrooh Sultanpuri etc. penned patriotic lyrics. Who can forget the heart rendering lyrics like ‘Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujawaan shaheed ho’ (SHAHEED); ‘Saare jahan se accha’ (MASOOM), ‘Vande Matram’ (ANAND MATH); and of course the cream of all ‘Aye mere watan ke logon’ and ‘Kar chale hum fida’ (HAQEEQAT).

Besides filmmakers and lyricist there was another group from the film industry, who was secretly yet diligently working for the freedom movement. This group was of actors who had come together under a single roof of Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) working stealthily for the cause of freedom, prominent among them being Prithviraj Kapoor, A.K.Hangal and Balraj Sahani.

In fact Balraj Sahani, the eminent actor who gave several hits like DO BIGHA ZAMEEN (1953), KABULIWALA (1961), WAQT (1963) GARAM HAWA (1973) etc. was born in a prosperous family but he had quit the luxuries and took up a simple job of teacher at Rabindra Nath Tagore's Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan in the late 30’s and even came close to Father Of The Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

Readers would be surprised to know that Balraj Sahani had the pleasure of working with Gandhiji for over a year and it was on the insistence of Mahatma Gandhi he joined BBC (British Broadcasting Network) radio service as a radio announcer so that through the media he could reach out to maximum Indians and spread the message of freedom.
