Dear Pradeep Sarkar
Greetings and congratulations once again on a well-made movie. Although I enjoyed Mardaani, I can’t get over the fact that a director of your caliber would do what you did.
Well, let me get straight to the point. I am speaking about the two obvious flaws I mentioned in my review; one where you did an Abbas-Mastan towards the end and the other, the track between well-known Kolkatta actor Jisshu Sengupta and Rani Muhkerjee.
The end first…
After Rani has the villain in her mutthi, so to speak, you went into flashback mode! I mean, c’mon, was there really any need for this digression? Why and how did this thought come to you that it was necessary to explain in detail what Rani did? Absolutely uncalled for! As a viewer, I was satisfied that being a cop, she was well-equipped to take care of herself. Explaining to the villain, that I did this and also did that and then I came to your place was childish!
And what about Jisshu? Was he Rani’s husband, boyfriend or just a friend? To be honest, I never understood their relationship. And what about that little girl staying with them? Who is she related to? Rani or Jisshu? So many questions, Sarkar…
That track is so haphazard.
To a trained eye [keeping your sensibilities in mind] I would go as far as to say that it was messed up at the editing. You might have had shot a fair bit of footage with the two to ensure that their relationship, so fundamental to the plot, was well fleshed out. In the final analysis, there was no flesh in his role!
I base this view of mine keeping Jisshu’s track record in mind. Why would an actor, so busy and hugely popular in Bengali cinema, opt for a role as ill-defined and minuscule as this?
Hopefully, the next time you handle a sensitive subject such as Mardaani, you will look into all finer aspects as well as sensitivities of performers in your project!
