Ask Priyanka whether she was hesitant to accept MARY KOM as it is helmed by a debutant director Omung Kumar and she reveals, “I’ve worked with several first time directors like Nikhil Advani, Tarun Mansukhani and many others in the past too. I don’t judge a film on a director. However, having said that, it would be unfair to say that MARY KOM is solely riding on Omung’s shoulders because this project wouldn’t have happened without our writer.”
She further adds, “Our country gives very little respect and salary to writers. Our writer (Saiwyn Quadras) approached Omung with this beautiful story. And I decided to do this movie based on its script. Plus, the cherry on the cake for me is that it’s produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who I think is one of the finest filmmakers of our country, and I am a huge fan of his. So I agreed to do the film. I am glad I did it because Mary herself cried after watching it and that means a lot to me.”
Produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, MARY KOM is all set to release on September 5, 2014.
