Dear Producers of HIGHWAY

I believe HIGHWAY has been received well by the critics. So I guess congratulations are in order. It's always a relief to know that the product you have invested so much of time, money and passion in is ultimately appreciated.

I too wanted to watch HIGHWAY. I was invited for the press screening on Wednesday, through glamsham.com, the publication I am associated with for the past eight years, and for whom I review movies. Unfortunately, the lady who was 'doling' out the tickets refused to let me watch the film.

According to her, Glamsham was already represented by another gentleman who was inside the venue. I took the trouble of introducing myself to her and informing her that it is I who do the reviews for the said publication. She wouldn't budge. Her whole body language was that of a high-handed billionaire who was giving alms to beggars!

It made me feel angry and stupid.

I was angry because the lady did not know her job. Even if she calls herself a PR person, she should know who the people are who review movies. That is her job; the least that is expected from her. She should also have a list handy with her while at the door. Secondly, as a PR person, she should have basic manners. Forget manners, she does not even know how to relate to another human being!

I am standing in front of her for two minutes trying to speak with her and she just decides to be too busy. A few journalists come behind me, stretch out their hands and she hands out their tickets!

I felt stupid because I drove all the way down from Bhakti Park, Wadala, to PVR ECX, Andheri, for this show. One need not be an Einstein to know that it takes a minimum an hour-and-a-half to reach the destination. I'm not even speaking about the expense one has to incur. If she had sold me a ticket, I would have gladly paid for it.

So here I was, left on the Highway, high and dry.

You cannot invite a guest, and then insult him or her. This is not done. If there is a problem, please do not invite, and if you do, please hire some sensible PR who knows her job and also has a basic idea of who the people are who review movies.

Many a time, a PR behaves snootier than a star. Same was the case here.

If this attitude had to come from someone who had invested in the movie, I still would have understood. But this here, is a nobody who has been hired to help out! In my 27 years as a journalist, I have never felt so humiliated before.

The next time your production is ready, I do hope, that neither me, nor other journalists have to go through this humiliation. We journalists, too, have our dignity and we can jolly well pay and watch the movie in a multiplex when it is released. That's much cheaper, at least for me.

Congratulations once again, on a well-made movie.

God Bless You
Martin D'Souza
