'People said I make only serious films'- Satish Kaushik on GANG OF GHOSTS

His biggest success till date, Salman Khan's TERE NAAM stays on to be one of the most memorable tragedies to have ever come out of Bollywood. However, Satish Kaushik, the man who has entertained as a comic actor in close to 100 films, isn't someone who wanted to restrict himself to a genre. Though he has directed thrillers as well as social dramas, Kaushik felt that it was high time he made an out-and-out comic entertainer.
"Lots of people said that I have been a comic actor for such a long time, but as a director I was very serious. They said, screen par toh itna hasaate ho aur jab khud ki picture banaane ki baari aati hai toh serious ho jaate ho," laughs Kaushik whose last directorial outing was TEREE SANG, which too was a relatively serious film on pre-marital sex.
For an actor who rose to fame with films like JAANE BHI DO YAARON and MR. INDIA before forming a steady partnership with the likes of David Dhawan and Govinda in the '90s, Kaushik decided to make an unusual comedy next in the form of GANG OF GHOSTS.
"My pre-condition though was that the concept should be a different," says Kaushik, "Ratanji (Jain) gave me an idea to watch this Bengali film BHOOTER BHABISHYAT. I saw it and felt that it boasted of a brilliant new concept that had all the potential to entertain audience at a pan-India level.''
He adds, ''I felt that chalo theek hai, people have been saying that I should make a comedy film so let me pleasantly shock them with the one which revolves around ghosts no less, and friendly ones at that."
He adds on a serious note, "I am glad I made the film. Comedy is a forte which is very comfortable to me. To make a film in this genre has been a therapeutic exercise no less."
GANG OF GHOSTS, which is produced by Ratan Jain and Satish Kaushik, releases all over on 21st March. And we'll be watching the results closely...
