Kundal Lal Saigal crafted a new grammar in film singing in the budding talkie era of the 30s thus crowning himself as India's first 'original' superstar whose aura and charisma still exist even after a century of his demise!
At the age of 12 Saigal gave his first rendition of Meera Bhajan in Pratap Singh's court. The Maharaja was so impressed that he predicted Saigal would shine in the world of music and as predicted Saigal reached the zeenat of music world.
Saigal began his career as an extra in the film MOHABBAT KE AANSU. Later in the movie YAHUDI KI LADKI Saigal sang his first song 'Nukta Chi Haii Gham-E-Dil...' However, it was in 1935, that with DEVDAS Saigal earned stardom. The movie based on Sharat Chandra's novel told the story of a tragic lover who takes to alcohol and destroys himself for want of love. The character of DEVDAS suited Saigal to the T. Saigal's depiction of the alcoholic lover was never portrayed so convincingly on the celluloid ever. The movie became such a big hit that K. L. Saigal became a sort of an obsession!!
To bank on his popularity, Saigal broke the ritual of employment in Film companies and started a new trend of freelance star system, thus, becoming India's First Superstar!
