Subhash ghai, earned the prestigious title of 'The Showman' from the legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor. He deservedly lived up to the title producing really big budget blockbusters like KARZ, HERO, RAM LAKHAN, KARMA, SAUDAGAR, KHALNAYAK, PARDES, TAAL etc. On the occasion of SG's (as he is fondly called) 68th birthday today, Glamsham.Com wishes the filmmaker a very happy birthday and discovers how he got his directorial debut film.
After completing VIDHAATA, thespian Dilip Kumar was so impressed by the directorial skills of Subhash Ghai that patting his back Dilip Kumar complimented him saying ''Subhash, You will surely make it very big.'' In fact Dilip Kumar was so bowled over by Subhas Ghai's technical approach, camera angles and scene picturizations that he worked with him in two more movies viz. KARMA, SAUDAGAR. However what may stun readers is that though Subhash Ghai is truly a magical behind the camera but he has no degree or diploma in film direction from any film institute. In fact at FTII he pursued graduation in 'Acting Course'.
Further even during his struggling phase he had not assisted any film director yet he had a commanding visualization power and was apt at scripting stories. Hence whenever he narrated a story he narrated it with such style that a person listening could visualize each and every scene. Once Ghai, narrated a script to his friend, Shatrughan Sinha, who was also his senior at FTII. More than the script Shatrughan Sinha was impressed by Ghai's narration and he introduced him to film maker N.N.Sippy. When Sippy sahib listened his narration he gave no expression, instead invited Ghai to a party that was being held in the evening. Ghai was baffled. He went to the party and was further surprised when Sippy sahib introduced him to his financers saying, ''Meet the director of my film!''
Thus without any knowledge of camera and film direction, Ghai directed his debut movie KALICHARAN, with Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy in the lead.
