Watching the trailer of Riteish Deshmukh's latest offering in Marathi- LAI BHAARI in Hubli- Karnataka, and the cat whistles and the claps that were generated with each of the dialogues, it was apparent that Riteish Deshmukh indeed has successfully transcended from Hindi cinema to Marathi cinema in an effortless manner and is bringing about the nuances and the punches of Hindi cinema to Marathi cinema and by pandering to the audience perhaps would be able to give a much needed shot in the arm to Marathi commercial cinema.
This is third intervention that Riteish Deshmukh has made in Marathi cinema, first being as a producer and making quality Marathi cinema of the likes of BALAK PALAK and YELLOW. He is now starting his acting career in Marathi cinema with LAI BHAARI and to support him in his endeavour is Salman Khan who would perhaps be making his first appearance in a Marathi cinema.
LAI BHAARI has all the ingredients of a potboiler action, set in a rural milieu, it has all the vital telltale signs of Marathi culture that has been given a heady commercial tadka by Riteish Deshmukh. Regional cinema is after all aspirational and it thrives and proliferates if the nuances of the identification associated with culture find manifestation in the cinematic oeuvre. Riteish Deshmukh seems to have leaf out of performances of Big B from DEEWAR and TRISHUL to etch out his character and one only hopes that the success he enjoyed as a producer in Marathi cinema, Riteish Deshmukh gets the same through his debut as an actor in Marathi cinema as well. Consciously or sub-consciously Riteish Deshmukh has chosen genre of an action star to make his debut through LAI BHAARI and perhaps this could be the reason why Salman Khan is also there in the film in a guest appearance for an item song. It also needs to be underlined that this was the first film where Salman wanted a larger role than what was offered to him and Riteish Deshmukh could not offer it to him, may be this opens a possibility of a full-length Marathi film for Salman Khan in future to be directed by Nishikant Kamat. Co-produced by Rajshri Marathi, LAI BHAARI is indeed going to offer oodles of action for the audience.
