In an interview Dhanush said, “I wished to become a Marine Engineer but destiny had other plans.” He added, “My father Kasthuri Raja, had been assistant director for 15 years hence when he got his first film as director, naturally he wanted to give his best shot. The movie was based on six teenagers. On the first day of the shooting the lead boy dropped out from the film and my father was in dilemma. Cancelling shooting for the day meant huge loss. Hence my father approached me. I was then studying in class XI and was ideal for the film. Being an obedient son, I did the film much against my desire.”

He continued, “The movie became hit and all the five boys in the film were flooded with film assignment, except me. I was discarded off. The filmmakers disposed me saying I did not look star material. Hence I was deeply hurt and blamed my father for discontinuing my studies and curbing my dream of becoming Marine Engineer. However, my brother Selvaraghavan re-launched me with Tamil film, KADHAL KONDAEN and I became a star overnight.”
