AMITABH BACHCHAN and JAYA BACHCHAN
Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan tied the nuptial knot on 3 June 1973, just few weeks after their movie ZANJEER released on May 11, 1973. Jaya Bachchan in an interview had confessed, ''Actually we were dating since past two years but since Amitji was passing through a lean phase we had decided that if ZANJEER proves a hit, then we will marry.''
Amitabh Bachchan too acknowledges the statement. In one of his interviews, the star of Millennium confided, ''Though ANAND and BOMBAY TO GOA were hits but the credit for their success was taken away by their central characters viz. Rajesh Khanna and Mehmood in ANAND and BOMBAY TO GOA respectively.'' He adds, ''Hence ZANJEER was my only hope to survive in the film industry. Therefore Jaya and I had decided that if ZANJEER clicks then we will marry and by god's grace ZANJEER was declared a hit on day one!''
The year 1973 proved a golden year for Amitabh Bachchan because not only ZANJEER became hit and he married Jaya but the same year he gave his second solo hit ABHIMAAN. And that's not all the same year he gave a number of hits like GEHRI CHAAL, SAUDAGAR, NAMAK HARAAM.
To add cherry to the cake, the same year he went on to win his second Filmfare award as supporting actor in NAMAK HARAAM.
The year also proved his versatility as an actor because he portrayed a variety of roles like in ZANJEER and NAMAK HARAAM he played an angry man, in GEHRI CHAAL he played a villain, who is involved in a bank robbery and attempts to kill the hero Jeetendra. Further in Rajshri production's SAUDAGAR, he gave a sensitive performance against the legendary actress Nutan and won wide acclaim.
