As expected and predicted it was Alt Entertainment and Balaji Motion Pictures' Sunny Leone starrer, RAGINI MMS 2, which led the show from amongst this week's multiple releases.
RAGINI MMS 2, GANG OF GHOSTS, ANKHON DEKHI and LAKSHMI
The opening varied from 30-50 percent with both multiplexes and single screens performing equally well. While the opening day is expected to be quite good, the general feedback for RAGINI MMS 2 is mixed, leaning towards negative, as the core audience which had thronged the cinemas expecting a mixture of horror and sex found the latter missing.
From the other releases, it was just the Sharman Joshi starrer GANG OF GHOSTS which started on a somewhat somber note (20-25 percent) but picked up noticeably thanks to the clean entertaining content and a novel theme; a comedy film about ghosts!
The other releases, Rajat Kapoor's ANKHON DEKHI and Nagesh Kukunoor's LAKSHMI, could not make much of a mark despite critical acclaim for both the films.
Meanwhile Yash Raj Films' Sonam-Ayushmann starrer BEWAKOOFIYAAN turned out to be film that appealed neither to the masses nor the classes. Having said that the Nupur Asthana directed venture, which netted 12.75 crore (to be validated) during the opening week, will be a profitable venture for the makers who are also the worldwide distributors and hold all the non-theatrical rights as well.
The winner of the first quarter of 2014, the Kangana Ranaut and Rajkumar Rao starrer, QUEEN, returned almost identical figures in the second week, as the first, thus netting a 37-38 crore in two weeks from India. The Vikas Bahl directed QUEEN is a clean hit, more so due to its low budget and good overseas (read US) run.
