Farooq Shaikh, who was a product of IPTA, had the privilege of working with legendary maestros like Satyajit Ray in SHATRANJ KE KHILARI, Muzaffar Ali in UMRAO JAAN, Sagar Sarhadi in BAZAAR, Sai Paranjpye in CHASHME BUDDOOR. Glamsham remembers the Indian film industry's sterling actor today on the occasion of his 66th birth anniversary.
While on one hand Farooq Shaikh marked his niche in the parallel cinema, he was also popular in commercial cinema. Remember Yash Chopra's NOORIE and FAASLE. Later BIWI HO TO AISI opposite Rekha and of course Manmohan Desai's TOOFAN opposite Amitabh Bachchan, though the younger generation may not know much about the film as it was a great failure at the box-office.
However, TOOFAN was Manmohan Desai's most ambitious film as his son Ketan Desai was directing megastar Amitabh Bachchan for the first time. Also, the movie had Bachchan playing a 'super hero' for the first time on Indian screen like today's KRRISH. The movie was widely publicized and was the most anticipated one. Farooq Shaikh played the role of an honest friend to Amitabh Bachchan, who loses his hands to save him in a clash with the villains.
Farooq Shaikh, who was passing through a lean phase then, was banking on the movie's success but tragically the film was a great disaster, leaving Shaikh disheartened. Nevertheless, his friendship with Amitabh Bachchan became the most memorable for him for the lifetime.
