For first time director Sanamjit Singh Talwar, stepping into the gangster world of DISHKIYAOON was a big deal indeed. Reason being that over the years while he was working towards turning director, his preferred genre was a romantic entertainer. However, it was stroke of luck that diverted him towards the underworld genre. Considering the fact that this is one stage and setting that has been explored to the hilt by maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, Sanamjit feared if there would be comparisons made between his and RGV's work.
'I thought that gangster films mein toh Ram Gopal Varma ne sab khatam kar diya hai. There is nothing new to be told so what would I do. I did have second thoughts about proceeding with DISHKIYAOON or make something else,' says the 35-year-old filmmaker who by then had forged a good association with the film's male lead Harman Baweja.
However, those around him motivated him to give it a shot and Sanamjit sat down on the script for an entire week before returning with something that was not just a cut apart from what RGV has done over the years but also boasted of an absolutely original tale.
'I was so very glad with the way DISHKIYAOON started looking on paper. It had a gangster milieu to it but in the kind of andaaz that has not been seen before in Bollywood,' says Sanamjit, 'For someone like me who at one point in time wanted to make only intense love stories in the mode of Yash Chopra and Raj Kapoor, the script of DISHKIYAOON turned out to be a luck-by-chance moment for me. This is when I gained good confidence that I had to make this film.'
Come Friday and it would be audience's turn to announce verdict once this Sunil Lulla and Shilpa Shetty produced film releases all over.
