Since the concept of THE SHAUKEENS dealt with three lecherous old men, who want to have fun late in their lives, didn't director Abhishek Sharma, of TERE BIN LADEN fame, fear of it getting vulgar or going a bit overboard in sensuality?
“I don't think it was difficult. As a director you have to take care about the essence of the film and my brief to both the writers and actors of the film was that lets work out on the background and innocence of the characters. If you can bring out the innocence, they will not look lecherous. The whole idea was to show that they are deprived and not lecherous. That's how I established in first 10 minutes so that one laughs at their innocence and understand it. Because then only you will sympathize with the character's condition. We wanted to establish that they are vulnerable 60 year old men,” justifies Abhishek
He adds further, “…That's the reason we have U/A certificate and censor board too appreciated it. It's not at all a vulgar film. And I don't want people to tag THE SHAUKEENS as sex-comedy because it's not that type.”
CHECK OUT: THE SHAUKEENS Movie Review
Considering old SHAUKEEN was quite ahead of its time, ask Abhishek if he had to further enhance the level of the new one going with the current trend and he says, “You can bring sensuality without being pervert or vulgar. It's about the taste and aesthetics. The old SHAUKEEN that came was way ahead of its time but not in vulgarity. It was great in terms of sensuality and bringing pain & vulnerability otherwise nobody would have talked about it if it was cheap film. So, neither that film nor this one is a crass.”
Starring Akshay Kumar, Lisa Haydon, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra in the lead roles and with cameos of Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Suniel Shetty, Dimple Kapadia, THE SHAUKEENS released today.
