Kalki Koechlin, who impressed all with her performance in Ayan Mukherjee's rom-com YEH JAWANI HAI DEEWANI last year, will now be seen playing an ABCD - American Born Confused Desi opposite Saif Ali Khan in HAPPY ENDING.
Ask Kalki how it was romancing Saif in the film and she reveals, “I am not really romancing Saif. We are already girl-friend and boy-friend in the film. We are from different worlds and we discover that. Vishakha, my character, is an ABCD – American Born Confused Desi, completely opposite of what I am in real life, an Indian Born Confused Frenchie! So yes I had to work on my accent because I am staying there in USA. She is an intelligent dentist, whacky and an independent girl. She doesn't want to lose Saif and always finds a way to come back at him. But finally when they part ways, they both learn something from each other. They both criticize each other in positive way and they understand why they are not made for each other.”
However, Kalki is often known for doing experimental cinema, like a MARGARITA WITH A STRAW, DEV D or THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS. So what made her do a commercial film like HAPPY ENDING?
“Raj and DK are quite intelligent writers. They have got commercial idea and have included lot of layers to HAPPY ENDING which gets lot of sub-text to it. I really liked that and hence decided to do it,” admits Kalki.

Going with the trailer of the film, HAPPY ENDING seems to be taking a very light-hearted approach to relationships, unlike the mentality of the people who take relationships and break-ups quite seriously.
Asserts Kalki, “The characters in HAPPY ENDING take themselves very seriously. But when we look at tragedy from the other perspective, it looks very funny. It is funny to watch someone going through break up but you can't laugh at that time. So you keep quiet and just be with them. It is kind of similar thing. And life is not just about tragedy, it is a mix of comedy and tragedy!”
Since HAPPY ENDING deals with the relationship issues in a different manner, we wonder whether the audience will accept the film or no. Quiz Kalki about it and she opines, “I think people have come a long way and will accept the other side to relationships as well. It is like we are making a typical Bollywood rom-com and also making it funny. And I think we do have sense of humour in our country. We see it on the social media and it would be great to see it in films as well.”
HAPPY ENDING, directed by Raj & DK and produced by Eros International, also stars Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D'Cruz, Govinda and Ranveer Shorey in the lead. The film releases on November 21, 2014.
