After receiving flak for his last few films like BULLETT RAJA and HUMSHAKALS, Bollywood nawab Saif Ali Khan is back to entertain the audiences with a fresh rom-com HAPPY ENDING.
While in HUMSHAKALS, he had a triple role and was criticized for hamming, HAPPY ENDING promises to be entertaining with Saif's double role. Ask him how different are both the characters and he reveals, “Both my characters in the film are really different. In a comedy like HAPPY ENDING, you enjoy a character and his problems more. They are never too drastic problems and he doesn't take them too seriously. He is a writer from Los Angeles. He is a lazy guy who has a good life. Most of his problems are in his mind. His predicaments are never so serious. They are fun problems which you'll enjoy watching. There is a little vulnerability to the character which is different for the romantic comedy space. He has run out of money, is losing his position at work to a girl he later falls in love with.”
He continues, “The second me in the film is more of the guy's alter ego. It's mostly in his mind. They have different rhythms of talking and expressing, of course a lot of scenes were done with the two of them. But while we were shooting, it was obviously just me playing both parts. But the scene came out very interesting, because of the dialogue between two people. I am two different people in the same scene.”
While the film is a light-hearted take on break-ups and relationships, we ask Saif is he similar to his character in real life too?
“There is a similarity between Yudi, my character in HAPPY ENDING, and Me. We are both very lucky and don't like to take things too seriously. Also nothing really that bad has happened to me, touchwood. At least the problems aren't very serious. These kinds of films are bit like P.G Wodehouse characters - rich guy, living alone, not got any boring domestic issues. He is quite relaxed, nice house, nice car. So there has been quite some similarity,” states Saif.

Interestingly, the film's first trailer and the music have received thumbs up from both the audience and the critics. Probe Saif about what are his expectations from this Raj & DK flick and he admits, “I hope we open well with HAPPY ENDING. Double figures will be good. 12 might be too high. What else do you need to open well? We have a great trailer, good music, good star cast. I will be interested to see what happens.”
He adds on a concluding note, “What 70 crores to 80 crores for my kind of films means is that the film has opened well but people haven't liked it. 100 crores means opened well and has been liked. 200 crores means opened well and is being watched repeatedly. 70-80 doesn't mean I am doing well. It means it opened well, did well but didn't have a repetitive audience, something like a COCKTAIL. You have to watch a film at least 3 times to make it a 100.”
Directed by Raj & DK and produced by Eros International and Illuminati Films, HAPPY ENDING stars Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D'Cruz, Govinda, Kalki Koechlin and Ranveer Shorey in the lead. The film releases on November 21, 2014.
