Dear Cherry

This must come as a surprise to you. Greetings of Light and a Happy New Year (pun intended).

It's almost three weeks now and no film or no actor has bettered your performance so far. Except of course, EKKEES TOPPON KI SALAAMI, which released on the same day as your film.

JIGARIYAA and your performance still keeps coming back to my mind. For that to happen, there certainly has to be quality not only in the movie but in your execution of the character of Radhika as well.

I wonder how it has been with you post the release. Has the industry welcomed you? Have you received congratulatory messages from seasoned actors? Has there been film-makers knocking on your doors with interesting scripts?

If not, don't worry. It will happen. Things take time, especially so in Bollywood, where if your mother's brother is not an actor or your father's brother is not a producer or if your chacha is not a distributor, nothing moves for you.

Here, mediocrity thrives. Way below average films gross Rs 100 Crores, seasoned actors are comfortable with juvenile stupidity and production houses pump in crores of rupees on a project with no content simply because there is a big star and they have the power to push out other releases by taking in all the shows. No competition really. They are even threatened by smaller films!

Yours is a rare talent. Your genius in JIGARIYAA was unmistakable. You made sexy look divine. You gave a new meaning to beauty.

Your film might not have gotten even more than one show per day but mind you, it was a film with good content and superb all round performances. It was a film that deserved a larger audience.

Unless distributors don't start giving films the space they deserve and producers don't press hard enough, good films will keep playing third fiddle to big budget trash.

Happy New Year (no pun intended)!

Your time will surely come and films like JIGARIYAA too will find larger audiences and box-office success.

God Bless You
Martin D'Souza
