Our headlines must be a conundrum for some of our patrons. So let us elaborate as to why we are comparing a lettuce fresh MARY KOM with an old release like HEROINE.

If we just tax the grey cells a wee bit, it will be obvious that both the above mentioned films are female solos, with no frontline male counterpart. And the first day record for such a venture rested with Madhur Bhandarkar’s Kareena Kapoor starrer HEROINE, which had netted around 7 crore on the opening day. But it is no longer so, as Omung Kumar’s Priyanka Chopra starrer, MARY KOM, has wrested the opening round netting 7-8 crore (as per early estimates).
Coming to the details, MARY KOM which saw a huge multiplex release (for a female solo), did not let its investors down by opening with a 30-35 percent start. Towards the latter shows the occupancy rose to 40-45 percent, at high end metro multiplexes. Given the quite positive audience feedback, it is but obvious that MARY KOM is all set to be a clean hit for sure; how big or small, time will tell.

Meanwhile last week’s Kunal Deshmukh directed Emraan Hashmi starrer, RAJA NATWARLAL, failed to con the audience, as we had already said and netted around 22 crore (to be validated) during the opening week and has failed at the box-office. Alarm bells for Emraan, taking into account his last few releases.
Concluding with another female solo success, Rani Mukerji’s MARDAANI, the film saw a steady 10 crore second week thus netting 35 crore in two weeks from India, thereby attaining an above average status, not to forget the encouraging overseas response.
