Debutant director Laxman Utekar managed to rope in the beautiful Urmila Kanetkar to perform a ‘tamasha’ in his upcoming Marathi film TAPAAL.
So what made him include a ‘tamasha’ in his film, which deals with the story of a bond between a childless couple and a kid? “In the 70s era, ‘tamasha’ was the only means of entertainment, since there were no televisions and computers available. So that was one reason to add it in the film and the other perspective was to add commercial value to the film.”
Probe him further about how did he go about shooting for ‘tamasha’ and he says, “We were shooting for ‘tamasha’ in a village. Almost 300-400 villagers gathered to watch it because there were curious to see Urmila Kanetkar perform a ‘lavni’. They thought that once this ‘tamasha’ starts, it will end quickly and will be lot of fun. But then they were very disappointed as there were many cuts in it. They wanted us to shoot it in one go so that they could have fun. So a few hours into the shoot, there were only 50-60 people left and all were cribbing that why were we shooting it for so long.”

Quiz Utekar how did he finalised Urmila for the ‘tamasha’ act and he discloses, “Well, in the 70s, the one who used to perform ‘lavni’ or ‘tamasha’, was very beautiful and everybody used to enjoy her ‘ada’ and their body language. It used to be loved so much that the villagers would slip into their fantasy world. So we wanted someone like that ‘jisko dekhke lage ki’ she is a lavni dancer. All these parameters fitted well in case of Urmila. Hence we decided to take her.”
Produced by Maitreya Mass Media and distributed by Pickle Entertainment, starring the likes of Nandu Madhav, Veena Jamkar, Milind Gunaji, Urmila Kanetkar and introducing Rohit Utekar, TAPAAL is all set to release on 26th September 2014.
