Karan Johar admits he has no friends in Bollywood at BOMBAY VELVET trailer launch
April 28, 2015 3:03:32 PM IST By Rajesh Kumar Singh, Glamsham Editorial
You find it difficult to believe it when someone as successful as him says it. He has done it before pointing to a stark reality of the Indian film industry that exists but few dare to acknowledge it. Since the time he has severed his ‘umbilical cord' from the star system of Bollywood, Karan Johar has been quite forthright and refreshing about his views on the industry and the way it functions. It was no different this time.
The occasion was the launch of the trailer of BOMBAY VELVET at a Mumbai suburban hotel. He is playing a key role in the film. The entire cast and crew was present including Ranbir Kapoor who was rumored to have had serious differences with the filmmakers over the final cut of the film. Even if he had them, there was no evidence of that in the way he readily answered questions of the media in the post launch Q&A. However, it was Karan Johar who was most eloquent and ebullient.
He was asked if he sought the opinion of his friends in the industry about his role in BOMBAY VELVET and what did they have to say about it. And his reply was frank and definite and he was not joking. He said there are no friends in this industry, there are just people and he cannot turn to anyone here for an honest assessment of one's work. People always say nice things on your face and praise you but that's that. He admitted that there existed a film fraternity but implied that there were no friends in it.
Even earlier he had said in one of his TV interviews that his survival and success and relationships in the industry had largely depended on how he kept people in good humour and did not hurt their enlarged egos. He was pointing to the underbelly of Bollywood, the world of glitz and glamour and fake smiles, behind which hides the ugly reality of professional and personal rivalries, jealousies, constant bitching, and back biting.
BOMBAY VELVET directed by Anurag Kashyap is releasing on 15th May 2015. The film is produced by Phantom Films and Fox Star Studios.
